Gymnocalycium Kikko

Gymnocalycium Kikko is one of the most striking and collectible cactus cultivars in the world. Its unique star-like ribs and angular tubercles give it a sculptural, armored appearance.

• Stem: Flattened globular, deep green to dark olive, 5–10 cm in diameter.

• Ribs: Formed by distinct angular tubercles arranged in a spiral or geometric pattern. The edges create a jagged or armored texture resembling samurai armor (Kikko means “turtle shell” or “armor” in Japanese).

• Spines: 5–8 short, curved spines per areole, brown to greyish-white.

• Flowers: Pale pink to white, funnel-shaped, blooming from the crown in summer.

• Variegated Forms: Some cultivars show beautiful yellow, red, or cream variegation, making them even more prized.

☀️ Care and Cultivation:

🌤️ Light:

• Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or filtered light.

• Too much direct sun can scorch the body, especially variegated forms.

• Grow under shade net (50%) or indoors with strong grow lights.

🌡️ Temperature:

• Ideal range: 20–35°C (68–95°F).

• Protect from frost — do not expose below 10°C (50°F).

• Keep warm during the growing season for best color and shape.

💧 Watering:

• Water moderately during active growth (spring–autumn).

• Allow the soil to dry completely between watering.

• In winter, water very sparingly to prevent root rot.

🌱 Soil:

• Use a well-draining cactus mix with added pumice, perlite, and coarse sand.

• Avoid organic-heavy soil. Good drainage is essential.

🪴 Potting:

• Choose a shallow, wide pot with drainage holes.

• Repot every 2–3 years in fresh mix; do not overpot.

• Blooms usually appear in summer, with multiple small pale pink flowers emerging from the apex.
